Catherine Young Bates

Catherine Young Bates boasts an extensive education in a range of fields, from archaeology and education to graphic design and painting. She is also the recipient of numerous grants and distinctions including a designation as an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (R.C.A.).

Exploring the legacy of Canadian landscape painting, Catherine's richly textured evocations of the Eastern Townships and Georgian Bay are executed with her own poetic sensibility and technical assuredness. An ongoing theme in her paintings is the ancient Greek myth of Icarus and his determined, though eventually perilous, flight towards the horizon.

Catherine has served as an artist in residence at the Leighton Foundation in Alberta (1997) and the American School in Switzerland (2001). Her paintings are proudly housed in numerous private and public collections.
