Kai McCall

Kai McCall (Canadian, b.1968)’s career as a professional artist began soon after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1991. A two-time recipient of a Canada Council Grant (2003 and 2004), Kai has been exhibiting his work in a consistent stream of solo and group shows in North America and the United Kingdom since 1994. Reviews of his work have appeared in publications such as Toronto Life, The Globe and Mail, and The Gazette.

Psychologically charged figures locked in theatrical interiors immediately beg the viewer to search for a narrative in the work of Kai McCall. Yet, the hints of narrative in these paintings are mere fragments, never committing themselves to a single closed reading. Like a work of fiction with the concluding chapters missing, the outcome of the narrative in each work is suspended in time, its final meaning ambiguous.
